Design Principles
Bachelor of Information Technology (Minoring in Creative Media Design)
Task 2 brief:
Create a visual analysis of the artwork you chose from the art gallery, using the Visual Analysis lecture notes and guide. Then, use your design principles knowledge to sketch three ideas for improving the design. Support each idea with a rationale and include visual references.
Fig 1.1 Lady Sarah Bunbury Sacrificing to the Graces by Sir Joshua Reynolds
Artist: Sir Joshua Reynolds
Title: Lady Sarah Bunbury Sacrificing to the Graces
Date: 1763–1765
Medium: Oil on canvas

Visual Analysis of the Artwork
Phase 1: Observation
The artwork consists of two elegantly dressed women under an architectural setting. The central figure wears a simple pink gown, along with a blue sash. She brings forth her right arm to place a golden item on a ceremonial looking structure. As painted, she wears a calm and very composed expression. Sitting next to her is another figure, the lady's clothed in a dark green gown, who is pouring something into a small golden item. The second lady also has a calm expression. The background has a massive stone structure and a cloudy sky. A three woman statues is placed at the upper left corner, there's also a flower vines that is wrapped on the bottom of the three woman statues.
Phase 2: Analysis
The artwork use emphasis as a central arrangement ensuring that she is the main focus figure. The second lady is in harmony with the main action without overshadowing the scene. The contrast and lighting help to draw attention to the main subject whose pale-colored dress contrasts effectively with the darker setting. Chiaroscuro (the treatment of light and shade in drawing and painting) enhances the three-dimensional aspect of this scene and gives life to the very figures. The soft draping of cloths and the positioning of arms and hands suggest slow movement, carrying the viewer's gaze softly across the composition.
Phase 3: Interpretation
The woman in the center looks likes she’s giving something up, participating in a ritual or tradition. This act may reflects a deep sense of duty and grace. This act of duty can be related to now days especially the sacrifices of woman in family responsibilities to professional and social contributions. The second lady beside her, carefully pouring liquid, looks more meek, as if she’s assisting in the act, learning from the first woman’s example. This might symbolize a passing of knowledge or tradition from one generation to the next. The background sculpture of the three bare woman might represent vulnerability, freedom, or beauty. This can be aligns with modern conversations surrounding body positivity, feminism, and self-acceptance.
Sketch Ideas
Concept that I would like to maintain is sacrifice, tradition, generational knowledge, and freedom.
For Fig 1.2 I want to show the meaning of tradition and generational knowledge. The reason why I choose the Egyptian style is because Ancient Egyptian art is known for its strong visual storytelling, often shows figures gesture. The three woman represent a generation, from the first woman with the small flame until the last woman on the right, presenting a written paper. The flame as it grew bigger represent the ambition for knowledge of them. Repetition has been applied to the three identical woman figures. the lines that looks like a shining light from the paper create a movement that makes the paper radiating a light.

2.
Fig 1.5 Second sketch idea
Rationale:
For Fig 1.5, the sketch also represent the meaning of tradition and generational knowledge through the symbolic elements of a tree, apples, and the interaction between two figures. The large tree represent growth while the apple represent knowledge and wisdom. The woman is sharing the apple which is the knowledge to the younger girl, emphasizing the continuity of learning and tradition. In this sketch, the flowing hair, curved tree branches, and dangling apples create a sense of movement. For the color, I want to make it brighter on the two figures and the apple that the woman holding. Darker color for the tree and background which can make a contrast illustration.

3.
Inspiration:
Fig 1.7 Third sketch idea
Rationale:
For Fig 1.7, I'm using the word sacrifice and freedom. The cage represents restriction, confinement, and the sacrifices one must endure, in hope for gaining knowledge. The woman inside, holding a book close to her chest, represent the possession of wisdom, dreams, or aspirations, yet she remains trapped, unable to share or act freely upon them. The flower may represent hope and the butterfly around the cage represent the freedom which one day she can achieve. The sketch use emphasis that focus on the woman inside the cage. The structured lines of the cage contrast with the flowing shapes of the vines and flowers, emphasizing the opposition between confinement and growth.

Feedback
Week 4: change the word "three graces" to sculpture, write the design principles, for the interpretation you can write it to relate to now days.
Week 5: write the reason why I choose egyptian style for the Fig 1.2, change the keyword to concept that I would like to maintain.
